Chia Seed

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is a herbaceous plant stem succulent, oleaginous from the Labiatae family, native to the valleys of southern Mexico and Guatemala. Consumed as nutritious food for the American civilizations in pre-Columbian period.

The seed is rich in mucilage, starch and oil is about 2 mm. in length by 1.5 mm. wide. It is oval, glossy, pardogrisáceo color to dark brown.

How is it?

The leaves are from 4 to 8 cm. long and 3 to 5 cm. wide. The flowers are hermaphroditic, violet. It blooms in July and August.

Chia plant requires to grow in a tropical or subtropical weather, like in Paraguay. After the summer, the flowers give rise to fruit in the form of "three-angled achene indehiscent".
